My B.A. was in Communication when I graduated from college, but about year later, I developed an interest in teaching, and because I was not certified, I knew I had a long road ahead of me.
I found The American Board For Certification of Teacher Excellence (ABCTE), and took a job as a special education paraprofessional for a year at my old high school. While I was there, I began having teachers and administrators review the resume and cover letter that I had been working on.
I remember them reviewing it, and then looking back at me, as if they were telling me "What in the world is this supposed to be?"
Over the next few weeks, I received a HUGE amount of information about how to "properly" format my cover letter and resume, information to include and not include, and most importantly, how to design a secret action plan document that would impress any interviewer who read it.
When I attened a job fair at my old college in the spring of 2006, I walked over to a table being used by a school district in Florida. I showed them my Cover Letter, Resume, and Action Plan document, and prepared to arrange a time to come back and interview later in the day.
However, a principal there read my documents in about 5 minutes, then took me aside and interviewed me right there on the spot. Twenty-five minutes later... I was told that I had a job waiting for me in the Sunshine State!
